๐ Season Watch โ Theme A: Trenches Rebuild
Detroit got younger and more athletic upfront by moving Sewell to left tackle, adding Mays at center in free agency, and drafting Miller, with Ratledge and Mahogany in just their second and third seasons respectively. The offensive line is positioned as a position group with potential to see the most improved play on the roster after ranking 31st in pass block win rate last year (56 percent) and 20th in run block win rate (71 percent), with Jared Goff taking 39 sacks last seasonโthe highest since he's been a Lion. The additions should equate to a net positive for the Lions' offensive line, which took a step back a season ago both in run-blocking and protecting Goff.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The King of the North: Barry Sanders at 58
The Lions' all-time rushing leader turned 58 this month. Barry Sanders holds the career rushing record with 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns, earning first- or second-team All-NFL honors each of his 10 seasons and 10 Pro Bowl selections. In 1997, he gained 2,053 rushing yards including a record 14 straight 100-yard games. What makes Sanders' legacy even more remarkable: he was just 1,457 yards shy of Walter Payton's all-time rushing record when he unexpectedly retired in 1999 at age 31. Jahmyr Gibbs now carries the torch as the franchise's next elite bell-cow back, hoping to write his own chapter in Lions loreโbut first, he'll need to get one more playoff win than Sanders did (the King played in only one playoff game, a 1992 wild card victory). Here's the all-time Lions rushing leader board:
- Barry Sanders โ 15,269 yards
- Billy Sims โ 5,106 yards
- Dexter Bussey โ 5,105 yards
- Altie Taylor โ 4,817 yards
- Mel Farr โ 3,072 yards
- James Stewart โ 2,890 yards
- Doak Walker โ 2,646 yards
- Theo Riddick โ 2,238 yards
- Kevin Jones โ 2,067 yards
- Jahmyr Gibbs โ ~2,300+ yards (active, total rising)
