🦁 Top Story
Jahmyr Gibbs inked his three-year extension on Thursday night and is expected to participate as a full participant in practice on Friday as the Lions advance through Day 8 of training camp. Following the big new contract extension for star RB Jahmyr Gibbs, the Detroit Lions have now committed over $1 billion dollars to re-signing their own talent—other than Jared Goff, it's all players drafted into Detroit since the Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell regime took over in 2021. The deal settles one of the week's biggest storylines and signals the front office's confidence in Gibbs as a centerpiece of this offense.

📊 Season Watch — Trenches Rebuild (Theme A)
Detroit ranked 31st in pass block win rate last year (56 percent) and 20th in run block win rate (71 percent), with the 39 sacks quarterback Jared Goff took last season being the highest since he's been a Lion. Early camp reports suggest the Lions' revamped line—anchored by newly signed center Cade Mays, first-round tackle Blake Miller, and second-year guard Christian Ratledge—is trending toward meaningful improvement. The offensive line is taking shape, with Blake Miller receiving first-team work at right tackle, Christian Mahogany and Juice Scruggs remaining part of the discussion at left guard, while Cade Mays continues the demanding transition into the starting center role. Cade Mays said you can't put a timeline on building chemistry up front, but he's liked the work they've put in early in camp and how he and Goff are working together to identify looks and get the right checks. The question isn't whether they'll be better—it's whether they can jump into the top 10 by season's end.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders at 30: The 25-Year Anniversary of the 2,000-Yard Season
This season marks the 25-year anniversary of one of the greatest individual performances in NFL history. Barry Sanders was just the third person in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards or more in a season, gaining 2,053 yards in 1997. In a Lions franchise chronically short on postseason success, the Lions earned five playoff berths in Sanders' 10 seasons, something the likes of great players like Calvin Johnson or Matthew Stafford didn't come close to accomplishing. Throughout his incredible pro football career, Sanders thwarted his opponents play after play, spinning, juking, and sliding through the hands of would-be tacklers for 10 incredible seasons, all with the Detroit Lions. He also was one of the rare players to walk away on top of his game, retiring on the eve of training camp before the 1999 season. Nearly three decades later, Lions Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders had a statue in his likeness unveiled outside of Ford Field, cementing him as the franchise's greatest ever—and a reminder that when the Lions find transcendent talent, they build monuments to it.
