🦁 Top Story
Head coach Dan Campbell hinted that the Lions could play starters against the Commanders on Saturday. The Lions return home for their sole preseason matchup—a game against the Washington Commanders. This moves beyond the conservative approach Campbell employed in past preseasons. Campbell suggested that because of the lack of joint practices, he may be more willing to play starters in the preseason more than he has in the past, saying "Maybe we play some of these guys in the preseason more than we have, that's where they get some of it."

📊 Season Watch — Theme D: Offensive Coordinator Impact
The Detroit Lions announced the hiring of Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, joining the Lions in 2026 after spending the previous three seasons (2023-25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over the duration of his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards (6,399). Detroit's Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Dan Campbell have been impressed by OC Drew Petzing so far. The transition from Ben Johnson is now in full swing. Petzing's background with elite tight end development—under Petzing's guidance, Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024-25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025 after leading all NFL tight ends in receptions (126) and receiving yards (1,239), while tying for the most receiving touchdowns (11)—offers intriguing possibilities for Sam LaPorta and the passing game's efficiency.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The Last Time the Lions Won a Playoff Game
Today marks August 19, 2026. It has been 34 years and eight months since the Lions last won a playoff game. The Lions have not even won a playoff game since 1991. In that year, the team came within a game from making the Super Bowl but lost to the Washington Redskins. That single playoff victory—38–6 over the Dallas Cowboys on January 15, 1992—remains a sore reminder of a franchise desperate to break a generational drought. With Dan Campbell at the helm and a resurgent roster, 2026 represents one of the most tangible windows to finally close that book.
Career Passing Touchdowns — Top 5 (Franchise)
- Matthew Stafford — 282
- Bobby Layne — 118
- Jared Goff — active, rising
- Greg Landry — 62
- Tobin Rote — 60
For nine seasons, Bobby Layne was the heart and soul of the Detroit Lions, leading the team to multiple NFL championships and firmly establishing the franchise as a perennial powerhouse. A true field general, Layne's fearlessness under pressure and unwavering commitment to victory made him one of the most respected and beloved figures in Lions history. Stafford's modern-era dominance—amassed over 12 seasons in Detroit—is a testament to his durability and consistency, though frustratingly bereft of playoff success during his tenure. The Goff era offers renewed hope that those touchdown passes might finally translate to meaningful January football.
