📊 Season Watch: Offensive Coordinator Impact (Theme D)
After Detroit stripped former offensive coordinator John Morton of play-calling duties in Week 8 of last season and fired him after the 2025 campaign, the Lions hired Drew Petzing as its new OC. Petzing joins the Lions after three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator, during which the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and ninth in rushing yards (6,399). Under Petzing's guidance, Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024-25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025, setting a single-season NFL record with 126 receptions among tight ends. The early camp reports show promise—Petzing has been focused on developing relationships with Jared Goff and the offense, building on a foundation that has Amon-Ra St. Brown, Gibbs, and other elite playmakers ready to produce under new play-calling architecture.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Twenty-nine years ago this month, Barry Sanders had one of the greatest single seasons in NFL history. Barry Sanders recorded the third 2,000-yard season in 1997, rushing for 2,053 yards. Sanders ran for only 53 yards during the season's first two games, then proceeded to run for exactly 2,000 yards during the final 14 games while eclipsing over 100 yards in each of those games. The highlight of the season was Sanders having one of the greatest seasons for a running back in NFL history, becoming the third player in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season and sharing the 1997 Associated Press MVP Award with Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
That 1997 campaign set the table for what would be the Lions' most consistent stretch of winning in the Super Bowl era. Sanders was the catalyst of the most consistent time frame of winning for the Lions, playing 10 seasons and rushing for more than 1,000 yards in every one of them, with a 2,053-yard year in 1997. Though the Lions fell short that postseason—exiting in the wild card round—Sanders' legacy remains the gold standard for Lions excellence: raw, electrifying, and forever franchise-defining.
