๐ฆ Top Story
Head coach Dan Campbell hinted that the Lions could play starters against the Commanders on Saturday, marking a significant shift in philosophy for this preseason. NFL teams have to cut down training camp rosters from 90 players down to the regular-season limit of 53 players by Aug. 30, and Coach Dan Campbell said time is of the essence for those fighting for positions. The Lions lost their opener to the Bengals, but tomorrow's home game will be their first real showcase of how the new offensive line rebuild and Drew Petzing's offensive scheme look under real game conditions.

๐ Season Watch
Theme D โ Offensive Coordinator Impact: Petzing joins the Lions in 2026 after spending the previous three seasons (2023-25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over the duration of his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards (6,399). Under Petzing's guidance, Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024-25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025 after leading all NFL tight ends in receptions (126) and receiving yards (1,239), while tying for the most receiving touchdowns (11). Detroit's Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Dan Campbell have been impressed by OC Drew Petzing so far. How well Petzing's scheme meshes with Jared Goff's arm talentโespecially after the disappointing 2025 campaign that saw the Lions regress to 9โ8โwill determine whether this offensive reset truly pays dividends.
๐๏ธ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders and the Greatest Show on Turf โ The 1997 Rush: Twenty-nine years ago this month, Barry Sanders was in the prime of his historic 1997 season, when he would rush for 2,053 yards, still one of the two greatest single seasons in NFL history. Sanders finished that year with an average of 128.3 rushing yards per gameโa pace that no Lions back has approached since. Though Sanders holds the Lions franchise record with 15,269 career rushing yards, that 1997 campaign remains the high-water mark of elite, elite Lions football in the modern era. Today's Lions, with Jahmyr Gibbs locked into a long-term deal, are building around a dynamic core that hasn't seen this kind of offensive firepower since the early Calvin Johnson years.
