📊 Season Watch
Theme D — Offensive Coordinator Impact
The Detroit Lions announced the hiring of Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, joining the Lions in 2026 after spending the previous three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Early reviews are glowing: Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Dan Campbell have been impressed by OC Drew Petzing so far. Over the duration of his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average and Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025 after leading all NFL tight ends in receptions and receiving yards. With a pass game coordinator in Mike Kafka who has winning pedigree from Kansas City, the Lions are hoping the new scheme unlocks an offense that underperformed in key moments last season.
🦁 Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders: 27 Years After the Greatest Career in Franchise History
Unpredictable on the field and off, Barry Sanders retired from the Detroit Lions in 1999 and left the NFL as one of the greatest running backs of all time. This summer marks 27 years since Sanders walked away at the peak of his powers. At the end of the 1999 season he retired from football, needing only 1,458 yards to equal Walter Payton's 16,726-yard record as the NFL's all-time leading rusher. He had 3,062 carries for 15,269 yards, 352 catches for 2,921 yards and scored 109 touchdowns. In the franchise's only playoff win during the Super Bowl era, against Dallas after the 1991 season, he rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 30 yards.
