📊 Season Watch
Theme A — Trenches Rebuild
Out are longtime left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow, and in are former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller. Mays is expected to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Glasgow, while Miller will slide in at right tackle allowing All-Pro OT Penei Sewell to shift over to left tackle.
The Lions invested heavily in the offensive line this offseason. Mays, arguably Detroit GM Brad Holmes' biggest pickup of the offseason, will be flanked by Christian Mahogany at left guard and Tate Ratledge at right guard. Detroit was still a top five scoring offense and top five overall offense last season. If the offensive line takes the kind of step forward the Lions think they can, this offense can be special considering the skill weapons they have.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
"The 2,053 Yard Season: Barry Sanders' 1997 Masterpiece"
Twenty-nine years ago this fall, Barry Sanders etched his name into NFL immortality. Sanders gained 2,053 yards including record 14 straight 100-yard games in 1997, becoming just the third player ever to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a single season. The 1997 season was a special one for Sanders, who that season shared MVP honors with then-Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Sanders ran for 53 yards during the season's first two games, then proceeded to run for exactly 2,000 yards during the final 14 games. He eclipsed over 100 yards in each of those games while leading the Lions to the playoffs. Sanders finished the season with 2,053 yards (then the second-highest total in NFL history) while averaging a whopping 6.1 yards per carry.
Career rushing record: 15,269 yards, 99 TDs—a franchise standard that still stands nearly three decades later.
