📊 Season Watch
Theme D: Offensive Coordinator Impact
The Lions hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, who joined Detroit in 2026 after spending three seasons (2023–25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator. Over his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards. Detroit's Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Dan Campbell have been impressed by Petzing so far. Goff praised Petzing's "great feel for what it's like to run an offense," balancing volume with intentional attack, and doing "a hell of a job" with the parts of coaching outside the X's and O's. The challenge: The Lions ranked #1 in scoring (33.2 ppg) and second in total offense (409.5 ypg) in 2024 under Ben Johnson, then slipped to 4th in scoring and saw their rushing game crater in 2025. Can Petzing restore that elite offensive efficiency starting now in camp?
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
27 Years Ago: Barry Sanders' Last Great Run
Barry Sanders topped out at 2,053 rushing yards in 1997—a landmark still seared into Lions lore. Sanders was remarkably durable, playing in 153 games and only missing seven. In the franchise's only playoff win during the Super Bowl era, against Dallas after the 1991 season, he rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 30 yards. He led Detroit to five playoff appearances and three 10-win seasons, including the franchise-best 12-4 record in 1991. Sanders walked away on top of his game, retiring on the eve of training camp before the 1999 season—27 years ago this summer. He finished with 15,269 career rushing yards, 352 catches for 2,921 yards, and 109 touchdowns. Still the franchise's all-time rushing leader by nearly 10,000 yards—a standard unlikely to be touched.
🔮 What to Watch
-
Gibbs contract negotiations: When does the star RB return? Watch for Adam Schefter updates on a potential extension timeline—camp can't proceed smoothly if this lingers.
-
Secondary health tracker: With both starting safeties (Joseph and Branch) on PUP, how aggressively does Campbell ramp up safety reps during Week 2 and 3 of camp? That timeline shapes the entire defensive readiness picture.
-
Blake Miller's acclimation: The rookie OT is central to the offensive rebuild. Early camp film will reveal how quickly he adjusts to NFL-level edge speed and technique—and whether Lions fans should expect growing pains or a Day 1 contributor vibe.
