📊 Season Watch: Defensive Backfield Health (Theme C)
The Lions face the season's biggest wildcard in their secondary: the availability of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. The Lions are hoping Joseph can get back to his typical form and erase injury concerns, but there have been reports his knee ailment could be chronic, with both Joseph and Brian Branch nursing injuries this offseason. Head coach Dan Campbell said Branch, rehabbing from a torn Achilles suffered last season, is on the right track but will be held out until potentially December. Joseph did not take part in on-field practices during OTAs and minicamp, with his availability dependent on how his knee holds up in camp. Chuck Clark and Christian Izien have been taking the bulk of first-team defense reps in the absence of the starters. Training camp will be the first real test of where both Pro Bowlers stand—and whether the Lions' depth signings prove adequate.
🦁 Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders turned 58 this past July 16, and his legacy remains the franchise's measuring stick for excellence.
Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998)—the first running back ever to do so—and in 1997, he became just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season. The elusive rusher ran for over 1,000 yards in every season of his career, topping out at 2,053 rushing yards in 1997. His career rushing record stands at 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns. What makes Sanders even more remarkable: he was just 1,457 yards shy of Walter Payton's NFL all-time rushing record when he unexpectedly walked away from the game in 1999. One of sport's greatest "what ifs," Sanders left on his own terms at age 31—a reminder that not all legends chase records. His prime was 10 seasons; the Lions haven't seen a franchise rusher of that caliber since.
