The Lions' O-line is reestablishing its bully mentality to get back on track heading into training camp, which kicks off this week. Free tickets will be available on the Lions' official website starting on Tuesday, July 21 at 10 a.m. ET, and rookies will report to camp on July 25, and veterans will follow them three days later on July 28. This is a critical reset moment for an offense that ranked 31st in pass block win rate last year (56 percent) and allowed 39 sacks, the most Detroit's allowed since 2020 (42).
๐ฐ Headlines
-
After the Detroit Lions added Tyler Conklin to a position that already included experienced vets Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright, Steve Oliver, after five seasons with the Lions, was promoted to replace the departing Tyler Roehl this past offseason. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was a purveyor of the league's shift to more "12 personnel" and "13 personnel" looks, and in 2025, his Arizona Cardinals were fourth in 12 personnel rate and led the NFL in 13 personnel rate from 2023-25.

Despite injuries, the Detroit Lions still have two top-10 safeties, per NFL execs and coaches, providing optimism as the team heads into camp with Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch both working their way back.

Last season, Detroit's offensive line regressed slightly, and quarterback Jared Goff was sacked 38 times, pushing his individual sack rate to 6.1%. ๐ Season Watch
Trenches Rebuild โ Offensive Line Reality Check. This is the critical week. Out are longtime left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow, and in are former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller, with Mays expected to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Glasgow, while Miller will slide in at right tackle allowing All-Pro OT Penei Sewell to shift over to left tackle. Detroit's interior line is getting younger, cheaper, and much nastier, with Cade Mays taking charge at center, and Tate Ratledge continuing his evolution at right guard. There's also expected to be good competition for the starting left guard spot, with Mahogany the favorite to begin camp, but Bartch brings veteran experience. If this group takes the step forward coaches believe is possible, paired with the league's best skill weapons, the Lions' top-five offense has genuine upside in 2026.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders at 28: What if the Lion Had Stayed? Today marks 27 years since Barry Sanders' stunning retirement on July 1, 1999. At just 28, Sanders walked away while still in his primeโalready the franchise's all-time rushing leader with 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns. Had Sanders played out his natural career window like other backs of that era, Lions historians estimate he could have approached 20,000 career yards and crossed 120+ touchdowns. Instead, his abrupt exit left Detroit with one of sports' great "what-ifs": not just for the franchise record books, but for what kind of championship runs Detroit might have made with Sanders in his 30s. The lion in him chose his legacy; the franchise felt his absence for decades.
๐ฎ What to Watch
-
When training camp officially kicks off on July 28, Blake Miller will not be handed the job, as Larry Borom awaits the rookie for what is sure to be an intense camp battle, and by the time the Lions travel to Cincinnati for the preseason opener on August 13, whoever wins that right tackle spot will be completely battle-tested.
-
Brian Branch to the PUP is a no-brainer after coach Dan Campbell sounded pretty pessimistic about his chances to heal by training camp, though Joseph's situation is much harder to predict, with Joseph having done everything he can to make it back on the field in 2026.
-
The left guard competition unfolds dailyโwatch whether Mahogany holds, or if Bartch and Frazier create a meaningful challenge. This could determine interior line cohesion for the season.
