📊 Season Watch: Schedule Regression Test (Theme B)
The Lions face a fascinating paradox in 2026. Based on projected win totals, the Detroit Lions have the easiest strength of schedule for the 2026 NFL season—a stark contrast to the rugged slate they navigated in 2025. The Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants are on Detroit's 2026 schedule, and each finished last in their respective divisions; the Lions drew these fourth-place opponents because they finished last in the NFC North. Yet three of the toughest opponents Detroit will face in 2026 are in their own division, and those six games could very well determine the Lions' postseason fate. This is the year to prove the rebuild works at scale—a gentler schedule provides no excuses.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders' Legacy: 28 Years of Speed and Immortality
Twenty-eight years ago this month, Barry Sanders was entering his final season with the Lions. The elusive rusher ran for over 1,000 yards in every season of his career, topping out at 2,053 rushing yards in 1997. Sanders became the first NFL running back to record five 1,500-yard rushing seasons, in addition to being the only back to do so in four consecutive seasons (1994-1997). Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998). He was the first running back ever to do so. When he departed, Barry left the game just 1,457 yards short of passing legend Walter Payton to become first on the NFL All-Time list. His 15,269 career rushing yards remain the franchise record and his 1997 season—a combined 2,358 yards of total offense—stands as one of the greatest individual campaigns in Lions history.
