๐ Season Watch โ Theme D: Offensive Coordinator Impact
Drew Petzing was tabbed to lead the offense after the team moved on from John Morton earlier in the offseason. Through four games, the impact has been mixed. Petzing joins the Lions in 2026 after spending the previous three seasons (2023-25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator, where the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards (6,399). Detroit also added former New York Giants coordinator Mike Kafka as the passing game coordinator, replacing David Shaw. While Goff has delivered early production, the question remains whether Petzing's run-heavy philosophy and Kafka's pass-game acumen can stabilize an offense that sputtered in critical moments against Carolina. The offensive line injuries (notably Cade Mays' recent return) will test whether the scheme can flourish with healthier personnel.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The Ghost of Barry Sanders Still Haunts Ford Field
Twenty-eight years ago this October, Barry Sanders' combined rushing and receiving production helped the Lions defeat the Dallas Cowboys 38โ6 in the divisional playoffs, which still stands as Detroit's only playoff victory since defeating the Cleveland Browns to win the 1957 NFL Championship. That 1991 season remains the high-water mark of the Sanders eraโa season where excellence up the middle of the field couldn't overcome the franchise's organizational challenges.
Sanders' most impressive season was 1997, when he became only the third back to rush for more than 2,000 yards; his 2,053 yards rushing and 305 yards in pass receptions, for a combined 2,358 yards, set a single-season record for running backs. Yet still seemingly in his prime, Sanders unexpectedly retired from football after the 1998 season, 1,457 yards short of breaking the NFL's all-time rushing record. He finished his career with 15,269 rushing yards (fourth all-time), and 99 rushing touchdowns (tenth all-time); in each of his ten seasons he was selected to a Pro Bowl and All-Pro team. The tragic irony: one of history's greatest running backs, anchoring a Lions team that compiled only a 74โ79 record during his tenure. Today's Lions fans wonder whether the current roster can finally end the playoff drought that Sanders couldn't break.

Drew Petzing's scheme in Week 5 โ Sunday's matchup offers a chance to assess whether fresh play-calling and Mike Kafka's influence can unlock the running game and short-to-intermediate passing attack that should define this offense's identity.
