๐ฆ Top Story
The Lions are "hopeful" Brian Branch will start practicing ahead of Week 5, marking a potential turning point in their embattled secondary after rejecting 'panic mode' after loss to Panthers. What makes Brian Branch so good is how instinctive a player he is, and the Lions could use a lot more of that in the back end of their defense. The safety's return could signal relief for a Lions defense searching for answers ahead of Sunday's trip to Arizona.

๐ Season Watch โ Offensive Coordinator Impact
Drew Petzing was tabbed to lead the offense after the team moved on from John Morton earlier in the offseason. Drew Petzing enters his first season with the Lions in 2026 after spending more than a decade coaching nearly every position on the offensive side of the football, and his wealth of experience and thorough approach were among the many things that attracted Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell to him. Yet the offense ranks 20th in rushing this season averaging 102.0 yards per game, partly due to being down by double digits against Buffalo and Carolina, though Petzing said Thursday they must be better running the football. Under Petzing's three seasons in Arizona, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and were ninth in rushing yards (6,399)โa reminder of what's possible when the scheme clicks.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders: The 2,053-Yard Season, 29 Years Later
On this date in 1997 (29 years ago this month), Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998), and the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner was also just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1997. Sanders gained 2,053 yards including a record 14 straight 100-yard games in 1997โa mark no NFL back has matched since. Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in every season with the Lions, the first NFL running back ever to do so, and made the Pro Bowl every season in his 10-year career. His career stands as a stark contrast to today's offensive struggles: Sanders compiled 15,269 rushing yards and 99 rushing touchdowns, a franchise standard that endures as a testament to elite rushing prowess. The current Lions offense ranks 20th in rushingโa far cry from what a truly dominant ground game looks like.
๐ฎ What to Watch
-
Branch's Week 5 availability โ Watch his progression closely; if he plays Sunday in Arizona, the secondary gains back one of its only reliable instinctive players. Don't expect a miracle, but his presence alone shifts the calculus.
-
Petzing's play-calling against the Cardinals โ Arizona's defense is beatable. Look for whether the new OC leans into the run game and establishes tempo early, or if pre-snap mistakes and field position issues haunt the offense again.
-
The Lions' power-running attack โ The Lions rushing attack was top 10 in the NFL in touchdowns (21) and average yards per rush (4.6) this past season behind Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs. They have the talent; Petzing and Campbell need to feed that horse downfield.
