One of the Detroit Lions' major offseason goals this year was to fix the offensive line after the retirement of Frank Ragnow took a huge chunk out of the unit's efficiency, and injuries and youth along the interior created inconsistency. Detroit cut Graham Glasgow and released Taylor Decker, then signed Cade Mays to a three-year, $25 million deal at center and Larry Borom to a $5 million contract to fill the gap at tackle. Penei Sewell moving to the left side is a massive overhaul, with Sewell being one of the best, if not the very best, tackles in the NFL. The Lions now have 80% of their starting offensive line coming from draft picks—Sewell, Mahogany, Miller, and Ratledge are all expected in the lineup this year.

Twenty-seven years ago this week, the Lions secured their last and only playoff victory of the Barry Sanders era. On January 5, 1992, Sanders helped propel the Lions to a 38–6 win against the Cowboys, their last postseason victory to date. Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989–1998), the first running back ever to do so. His 1997 season remains legendary: 2,053 rushing yards including a record 14 straight 100-yard games. His career Lions rushing record: 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns.

Despite his dominion over the field, Sanders retired in 1999 just 1,500 yards shy of Walter Payton's rushing record. The reason? Frustration with the Lions' management and direction, combined with the team's lack of postseason success—they never reached a Super Bowl during his tenure. It remains one of football's greatest "what ifs."
