๐ฐ Headlines
-
The Detroit Lions are losing nose tackle DJ Reader to the New York Giants in free agency for a two-year, $12.5 million deal. Detroit hasn't added much to replace these two players, signing veteran defensive tackle Jay Tufele last week and reportedly signing undrafted rookie Aidan Keanaaina.
-
The team announced that they have signed defensive tackle Jay Tufele and linebacker Joe Bachie. Bachie will compete with Damone Clark, Trevor Nowaske, and rookie Jimmy Rolder for a reserve role on the team. With the addition of Tufele and Bachie, the Lions have 78 players signed to their 90-man roster. However, with nine UDFA signings awaiting team confirmation, Detroit has roughly three open roster spots remaining.

The Lions could see fewer primetime and nationally televised games in 2026, and it won't really be their fault. The Dolphins are going pretty much full rebuild, and didn't do anything in the offseason that screams star power. The Vikings are NFC North rivals, but they're pointing towards rebuilding themselves and feel like 1:00 opponents.
-
The Lions may have found themselves a premium backup quarterback in Luke Atlmeyer. He's thrown 11 interceptions in the last two seasons combined. The guy can manage a game like it's nobody's business, and that is what you need from a backup quarterback.
๐๏ธ Podcast & Media Picks
The Lions beat continues on Locked On Lions, which features in-depth post-draft analysis of Blake Miller and the team's rebuild strategy. Matt Dery covers the offensive line overhaul and breaks down how league executives are reacting to the Lions' draft, including praise for Keith Abney and debate about Blake Miller's long-term fit at tackle.
๐ Season Watch: Trenches Rebuild (Theme A)
One of the Detroit Lions' major offseason goals this year was to fix the offensive line. Last year, the retirement of Frank Ragnow took a huge chunk out of the unit's efficiency, and with injuries and youth along the interior, there was a lot of inconsistency and downright bad play. The 2026 draft addressed this head-on: For the first time in several drafts, the Lions invested in pass rush. Not only did they take Derrick Moore in the second round, but they also invested in some interior pass rush with both their sixth-round (Skyler Gill-Howard) and seventh-round (Tyre West) picks. With Moore, DJ Wonnum, Aidan Hutchinson, a healthy Alim McNeill, and Levi Onwuzurike, plus a second-year jump from Tyleik Williams, Detroit's pass rush finally has some true potential.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
All-Time Rushing Leaders (Franchise)
Before Calvin Johnson became a legend, before Bobby Layne led the dynasty, there was Barry Sandersโand his mark on the Lions remains untouched. Here are the franchise's five greatest ground gainers:
- Barry Sanders โ 15,269 yards
- All-time Passing Leader: Matthew Stafford 3,898/6,224, 45,109 yds, 282 TD (Stafford also ran effectively)
- Mel Farris โ 4,682 yards (1960s cornerstone)
- Steve Bartkowski era runners โ significant contributors through 1970sโ80s
- Jason Stewart โ 3,800+ yards (1990s fill-in)
Sanders' 15,269 yards remain 3,900+ ahead of second placeโa testament to his explosive, eight-year run in Detroit. Barry Sanders holds the all-time Approximate Value leader with 149 AV, a metric that captures his outsize impact on winning.
