๐ฆ Top Story
The Lions drop to 1โ1 after a 41โ31 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, signaling that despite a season-opening OT victory, this team still has major work to do. The short week of recovery and preparation that impacts recovery time for the offensive line, in particular, looms large as Detroit prepares for Week 3 against the Jets on Sunday.

Coach Dan Campbell provided an injury update on cornerback Avonte Maddox after Thursday's loss. Monitor the secondary carefully heading into Sunday's divisional-style AFC East showdown.
-
Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell restructured contracts with the Lions early in the week, signaling continued financial maneuvering to stay flexible under the cap as the season unfolds.

The Lions offense remains formidable despite the loss: Detroit's 2025 unit was among the NFL's best while carrying one of the league's worst pass-blocking lines, scoring 481 points and finishing fourth in NFL scoring yet 31st in pass block win rate at 55.5 percent.

๐ Season Watch โ Theme A: Trenches Rebuild
The Lions entered 2026 with a new-look offensive line featuring former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller, with Mays filling the vacancy created by the departure of Graham Glasgow and Miller sliding in at right tackle allowing All-Pro OT Penei Sewell to shift over to left tackle. The question is whether this chemistry can gel fast enough. The pass-blocking disaster of 2025 left Jared Goff sacked 39 times, six more than in 2024, and facing 152 pressuresโa burden the new unit must alleviate. Two games in, watch how the interior holds up and whether Sewell's transition to left tackle stabilizes the protection scheme.
๐๏ธ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The King of the North: Barry Sanders' Rushing Dynasty
Thirty-five years after Barry Sanders electrified Ford Field in 1989, his shadow still looms large over every Lions running back who takes the field. In 10 seasons, Sanders rushed for 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns, won the 1997 NFL MVP, and posted 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons. He gained 2,053 yards including record 14 straight 100-yard games in 1997. No Lion has ever approached that ceilingโand no Lion probably ever will. His surprise retirement in July 1999 at age 30 remains one of the sport's great mysteries and one of Detroit's enduring "what ifs."
Here's the Lions' all-time rushing yards leaderboard:
- Barry Sanders โ 15,269 yards
- Billy Sims โ 5,106 yards
- Dexter Bussey โ 5,105 yards
- Altie Taylor โ 4,817 yards
- Mel Farr โ 3,072 yards
- James Stewart โ 2,890 yards
- Doak Walker โ 2,646 yards
- Theo Riddick โ 2,238 yards
- Kevin Jones โ 2,067 yards
- Jahmyr Gibbs โ ~2,300+ yards (active, total rising)

-
Offensive line chemistry under fire: The Jets' defensive line will test Detroit's new unit early and often. Watch for sack rates and disruption patternsโa benchmark against which we can measure progress through Week 5.
-
Secondary health: Monitor Avonte Maddox's status closely; if Detroit is forced to shuffle the cornerback rotation, it could expose soft spots against New York's pass game.
