🦁 Top Story
The Detroit Lions fell 16-14 to the Cincinnati Bengals in their 2026 preseason opener on Thursday, but the team didn't play most of its starters and the contest was mostly to see how the team's depth pieces would look in real NFL action. Ahmed Hassanein impressed with an early sack against Bengals starting quarterback Joe Burrow, signaling that some roster depth is stepping up in meaningful ways.

📊 Season Watch
Theme A — Trenches Rebuild
Out are longtime left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow, and in are former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller. Mays is expected to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Glasgow, while Miller will slide in at right tackle allowing All-Pro OT Penei Sewell to shift over to left tackle. Mays will likely be flanked by Christian Mahogany at left guard and Tate Ratledge at right guard. Ratledge's 73.5 Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade ranked 12th among all NFL guards and second among rookie guards last season, and over his last 12 games didn't allow a sack and gave up only four quarterback hits, with Detroit expecting him to be even better in 2026. This is a younger, hungrier line with more position flexibility than years past.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
"The Run That Changed Everything: Barry Sanders' 1997 MVP Season"
The highlight of the 1997 season was Barry Sanders having one of the greatest seasons for a running back in NFL history, becoming the third player in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season, and Sanders shared the 1997 Associated Press MVP Award with Packers quarterback Brett Favre. His 1997 season saw him rush for 2,053 yards and 305 yards in pass receptions, for a combined 2,358 yards, setting a single-season record for running backs. That season included a record 14 straight 100-yard games. Though the Lions ultimately fell short in the postseason—the Lions finished 9-7 and qualified for the playoffs for the fifth time in seven seasons, the best stretch in franchise history—Sanders' dominance remains the franchise's most electrifying individual performance.
Career Rushing Yards — Detroit Lions All-Time Top 5:
- Barry Sanders — 15,269 yards, 99 TDs
- Billy Sims — 5,106 yards
- Dexter Bussey — 5,105 yards
- Altie Taylor — 4,817 yards
- Mel Farr — 3,072 yards

Offensive Line Competition Heat: With five new or shifted starters on the interior and outside, look for camp battles to intensify in Week 2 of training camp. The guard position in particular—Christian Mahogany vs. Ben Bartch vs. Juice Scruggs—will shape how quickly this new unit gels.
-
Roster Cutdown (Aug. 30): The Lions must trim their roster to 53 players. Preseason performance from depth pieces like Ahmed Hassanein and special teams contributors will determine who survives the cut and who heads to the practice squad.
