📊 Season Watch — Defensive Backfield Health
Kerby Joseph is currently rehabbing from a knee injury that could sideline him to start the 2026 season, and the Lions won't have an update until training camp, raising concerns about whether the knee injury is chronic in nature. Beyond Joseph, Brian Branch's ability to play in the slot, support the run and blitz off the edge made him a key chess piece in the defense, and without him Detroit loses one of its most dynamic defenders. Detroit has made solid depth additions with Chuck Clark and Avonte Maddox, and plans to use Christian Izien if Joseph isn't ready. Camp will reveal whether those reinforcements can fill the void of Detroit's All-Pro safety tandem.
🦁 Lions History & All-Time Greats
Thirty-four years of heartbreak—then redemption.
On January 5, 1992, the Detroit Lions defeated the Dallas Cowboys 38–6 in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game, a victory that stood alone for three decades. That revved-up Lions team, in front of a raucous white towel-waving crowd of 78,290, played the best game in franchise history during the Super Bowl era. The Lions wouldn't win another playoff game until 2024, when they ended a nine-game postseason losing streak—the longest in NFL history—that dated to that January 1992 victory over Dallas.
Career Interceptions — Franchise Record Holders:
- Dick "Night Train" Lane — 62 (franchise record; 14 in 1952 still NFL single-season record)
- Jack Christiansen — 46
- Lem Barney — 56
- Dick LeBeau — 48
- Jerry Norton — 42
🔮 What to Watch
-
Rookies report July 25, veterans July 28, with the first training camp practice likely the day after veterans arrive. Expect early battles along the offensive line and at the secondary positions.
-
Monitor how much the organization trusts new OC Drew Petzing and DC Kelvin Sheppard moving forward—early camp chemistry will signal whether they can lead the Lions back to contention.
-
If the Lions can reestablish dominance on the offensive line, ensure health of key defensive playmakers, and integrate rookie talent seamlessly, they'll be well-positioned to challenge for the NFC North title and make a deep playoff run.
