📊 Season Watch — Theme C: Defensive Backfield Health
Uncertain injury timelines for Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch make safety addition this offseason a must for Detroit Lions. Joseph is now dealing with a chronic knee injury, while Branch is recovering from a torn Achilles. While Branch is likely to be recovering until at least October, the situation with Joseph is tougher—his knee could seemingly go either way, and could be an injury that sticks with him the rest of his career. Detroit will add to the safety position this offseason with a necessary move; it's easy to see that the Lions are likely to add a safety to the mix this offseason. Detroit should easily bring back standout Avonte Maddox, who represented a major success story from free agency in 2025 and was a key piece when both Joseph and Branch were gone.
🗓️ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The Ironman of the Trenches: Barry Sanders' Record-Breaking Legacy
Twenty-seven years ago this week in April 1999, Barry Sanders held the all-time franchise rushing record with 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns—a standard that still stands unmatched in Detroit football history. Sanders' career was defined by durability and relentless production: his 1997 season saw him rush for 2,053 yards, and his 3,062 career attempts placed him among the NFL's all-time most-used backs. What made Sanders legendary wasn't just the yardage—it was the refusal to leave anything on the field. He played through pain, accumulated tackles on his legs, and embodied the working-class ethic that defines Lions football. Today's trenches rebuild with Blake Miller mirrors that same grit: a four-year Clemson starter who missed just one practice in four seasons due to injury, continuing the tradition of Lions players who understand what it means to show up and do the work.
🔮 What to Watch
-
Day 2 and Day 3 drafting (Friday–Saturday): With only one pick in the top 100 (No. 50 overall), the Lions have seven picks in Rounds 4–7 to address depth across the defense, linebacker room, and secondary. Watch whether the team trades up, down, or stays patient with proven evaluation.
-
Safety room developments: Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell made clear that they're not waiting on total clarity from Joseph or Branch before 2026 kicks off. Monitor any additional signings or draft-day moves that signal how confident the front office is about either starter's availability.
-
Penei Sewell's left tackle transition: The move of a proven right tackle to the blind side is a big swing—monitor offseason OTA reports and training camp footage to see how quickly Sewell adjusts and whether chemistry forms with Miller at RT.
