๐ Season Watch: Trenches Rebuild (Theme A)
The offensive line renovation is the linchpin of Detroit's bounce-back bid. The Detroit Lions offense from 2025 was one of the NFL's best units while carrying one of the league's worst pass-blocking offensive linesโscoring 481 points and finishing fourth in scoring while ranking 31st in pass block win rate at 55.5 percent. Detroit's pass block win rate dropped from 64 percent and 12th in the NFL in 2024 to 55.5 percent and 31st last season, and Jared Goff was sacked 39 times and faced 152 pressures.
Out are longtime left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow, and in are former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller. Penei Sewell has moved to left tackle, first-round pick Blake Miller emerged from camp as the answer at right tackle, and Tate Ratledge returns at right guard after a promising rookie season. Ratledge's 73.5 Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade ranked 12th among all NFL guards and second among rookie guards last season, and over his last 12 games, he didn't allow a sack and gave up only four quarterback hitsโwith Detroit expecting him to be even better in 2026. The formula is simple: if this line stops the bleeding in pass protection, the elite receiving weapons and playmaking prowess can truly take flight.
๐ฆ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Thirty-Five Years of Barry Sanders
Barry Sanders, born on July 16, 1968, won the 1988 Heisman Trophy in his junior year at Oklahoma State University and was chosen by Lions head coach Wayne Fontes with the third pick in the first round of the 1989 NFL draft. This week marks an anniversary worth honoring: it's been 27 years since Barry Sanders surprised the world by retiring abruptly in July 1999, walking away at age 31 with 15,269 career rushing yards โ still the franchise record.
Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions (1989-1998), becoming the first running back ever to do so, and the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner was also just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1997. He led Detroit to five playoff appearances and three 10-win seasons, including the franchise-best 12-4 record in 1991.
Career Rushing Yards (Lions All-Time Top 5)
- Barry Sanders โ 15,269 yards
- Billy Sims โ 5,106 yards
- Dexter Bussey โ 5,105 yards
- Altie Taylor โ 4,817 yards
- Mel Farr โ 3,072 yards
