Trenches Rebuild (Theme A)
The Lions finished the 2025 season with PFF's 12th-ranked offensive line, but there are question marks or inexperience at every position entering 2026. The Lions will enter the 2026 season with a new-look offensive line, with longtime left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow out, and in are former Panthers interior offensive lineman Cade Mays and rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller. The Lions ranked fourth in scoring despite finishing 31st in pass block win rateโa rebuilt offensive line could raise the 2026 ceiling. Through three weeks of action, the revamped unit is being tested early, with Ben Bartch's foot injury forcing depth into the fold. The push to shore up the trenches after a year of offensive line turbulence remains central to whether the Lions can sustain their offensive explosiveness under the new system.
๐๏ธ Lions History & All-Time Greats
Barry Sanders: 27 Years Since the 2,000-Yard Season
The 1988 Heisman Trophy winner was also just the third person to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1997. Sanders was eventually coronated the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1997 when he ran for 2,053 yards (128.3 yards per game!) โ a magic carpet ride that transcended even record-setting single seasons. Sanders shared the 1997 Associated Press MVP Award with Packers quarterback Brett Favre, one of the rare moments in modern NFL history when an offensive lineman and running back split individual honors. He had 3,062 carries for 15,269 yards, 352 catches for 2,921 yards and scored 109 touchdowns in his Lions career. It's been 30 years since the Lions' last playoff victory, a game in which Sanders ran for 69 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries โ a stark reminder of the gap between individual greatness and sustained organizational success.
