The Lions hired Drew Petzing as their new offensive coordinator after he spent the previous three seasons leading the Arizona Cardinals' offense. Petzing's arrival signals an evolution of the Lions offense, with his background suggesting Detroit could become more versatile, more play-action heavy, and even more dangerous in 2026. This marks a fresh start after John Morton's tumultuous tenure ended mid-season.

๐ Season Watch: Offensive Coordinator Impact
Over three seasons with Arizona, Petzing's offense ranked second in the NFL in rushing average (4.92) and ninth in rushing yards, while Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2024-25) and was named First-Team AP All-Pro in 2025. The biggest change Lions fans may notice is an increased emphasis on the run game setting up the pass, with Petzing's system typically using multiple run looks, motion, and play-action to create mismatches. Another major area where Petzing could impact the offense is tight endsโin Arizona, Trey McBride became a focal point of the passing game, and that could mean a huge season for Sam LaPorta. The offensive evolution under Petzing hinges on Jared Goff's ability to adapt to fresh play-calling after John Morton's struggles in 2025.
