Offensive Coordinator Impact (Theme D)
The veteran quarterback Jared Goff is excited to continue to work with new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing after a disappointing 2025 season. Petzing spent the past three seasons (2023-25) as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator and has impressed Goff with his clear communication. Goff noted that "The best thing he's done so far is build something tailored to the guys we have. It may be something he loves, and if it doesn't fit for us, he won't do it." During his three seasons leading Arizona's offense, the Cardinals ranked second in the NFL in rushing average and were ninth in rushing yards; Cardinals TE Trey McBride earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections under Petzing's guidance. The Lions' offense appears energized heading into the season opener.
๐๏ธ Lions History & All-Time Greats
The King of King: Barry Sanders at 28 Years Into His Retirement
Barry Sanders surprised the sports world by retiring from his professional playing career shortly before the 1999 season. That fateful summer was now 27 years agoโa quarter-century since one of the NFL's most electrifying athletes walked away at the height of his powers. At the time of his retirement, he needed only 1,458 yards to equal Walter Payton's NFL all-time rushing record. When he retired after the 1998 season, Sanders had amassed 15,269 yards rushing, second all-time to Chicago's Walter Payton. Barry Sanders rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his 10 seasons with the Detroit Lions, making him the first running back ever to do so. The mystery of his departure remains one of the great "what ifs" in Lions historyโa talent so rare that even retirement couldn't diminish his legend.
